I've got it! (a citation anyhow.). It's a German court case, but not a
German restaurant.
This is from an article in Newsweek for March 1, 1993, page 36 (only). It
has been determined to be the International Newsweek (or something like
that) because the same story does not exist in the US version of that
magazine. I got it from Osamu Nagase, a Japanese author who may actually be
on this list. (Thanks Osamu!)
Here is the quote, from a longer article:
"In the northern city of Flensburg last year, a judge awarded damages to a
couple who sued their travel agent, claiming that their holiday in Turkey
had been ruined by the sight of a group of severely handicapped people being
fed in their hotel dining room."
To tell the truth, I've been getting depressed about disability "urban
folktales" with the prevalence of the cap-in-hand thingie. I actually
decided that the Chicago Ugly Laws were a myth when, after chasing down a
set of references from Paul Longmore to Frank Bowe, the citation ended in a
vague reference to letters to the editor of Active Living magazine over a
six-month period. But recently I found a good reference to a Robert Burgdorf
article that actually has chapter and verse on the Ugly Laws. So maybe our
myths are reality after all?
