Now that I've got your attention, I'll clarify. A little ad hoc group
has formed around the idea of making the SDS conference widely available
on video, in a tech format to be determined, likely by someone with more
knowledgeable in these matters than our group. We're interested in both
archival video and live teleconferencing.
SDS and the disability world in general being what they are, we'd love
to offer incentives, but our cupboard is pretty bare. So here's what we
(actually I) are thinking.
Is there a way to turn this venture into publishable scholarship about
either the process, its reception, both, or something else? If someone
has an idea, we'll look for funding. At the risk of hubris, I've been
annointed for my grant writing skills (the U of M has one of my grants
-- for my DS in music book-in-progress -- available online as an example
of a model proposal), and I'm offering my expertise, such as it is, to
anyone who'd like to try to turn SDS into a media event. I think
contacting me on-list is preferable, because we can use all the feedback
we can get and may even grow some collaborations this way.
Getting back to my subject heading, I don't think I've ever watched an
entire reality show on TV, although I occasionally see a few minutes
while waiting for something else. Maybe what we should be doing is
trying to break into this market. There's already Extreme Makeover-Home
Edition (o9r whatever), which often builds accessible dream homes for
needly families (sappy, but not entirely bad, imho). There's also The
Swan, where they give away plastic surgery, which is obviously
disgusting. We can do better, of course. Ideas?
