PEANuT/Insight IPV course, 5th - 9th September 2005
PEANuT are again joining forces with Insight, pioneers in the use of
participatory video (PV) as a tool for empowering individuals and
communities. This will take place:
Sept 5 - 9 2005
For more details of this course go to:
http://northumbria.ac.uk/sd/academic/sas/sas_research/pa/ipv/
Directed by Chris and Nick Lunch, Insight have nearly 10 years experience of
participatory video work with various groups in the UK and abroad. In the
UK, Nick (the trainer for the forthcoming course) has particular experience
empowering young people through positive environmental projects and cultural
linking on run-down council estates, as well as helping mental health
service users use video as a therapeutic tool for developing confidence and
sharing their stories. Internationally, Insight have developed PV as a tool
for involving communities in research and development in ways that
authentically represent their views and needs, and which deliver positive
change. PV can provide marginalised communities with a lasting tool for
reaching out to, and truly involving, all parts of a community, as well as
enabling the horizontal exchange of experiences and local innovations
between communities facing similar problems. Insight have succeeded in
getting marginalised voices heard at government level, affecting real
change, through helping people produce powerful video messages. See
http://www.insightshare.org/Video/video.htm, or follow the link on the
'Introduction to Participatory Video' section of the PEANuT web-site for
some examples of their work.
Also attached to this email are details of an Insight (and Macaulay
Institute) event taking place on the 7th and 8th July in London - get to
this if you can!
We need 3 organisations to provide 'placements' for the IPV course. Those
taking part in the course will be split into 3 groups (probably of 4 people
each if we have 12 trainees), each group working with a local organisation
to 'skill them up' in the use of video technology during the placement part
of the course. In the day and half practical experience the organisations
will clearly only get an intro into participatory video, but a very short
film will also be produced in rough edit during that time which will
hopefully may be of use to the organisation. For example this film could
focus on what services you or they offer, or could be made to invite/attract
new members to join. It must be emphasised that the organisations' clients
will decide the focus on the day and there must be no set agenda, no
expected product, before we begin. Also, like the placements on the
Introduction to Participatory Appraisal courses, the main focus of the
placement is to train the IPV course participants - however, (and also like
the IPA course placements) benefits will undoubtedly accrue to the placement
providers, the clearest of which is to allow the organisation's clients to
have a go with the camera and try out some participatory video for free. If
you're interested, in or around Newcastle, and/or want to find out more,
either send me and email, or ring me on 0191 2273753.
