the Vermandois is, of course, a region and (later) a county, corresponding
roughly to the present départements of the Aisne and the Somme.

*Vermand* is a small town 12km from Saint-Quentin, which latter was the Roman
capital of the Vermandois (Augusta Vermanduorum).
Vermand was, according to Joanne's massive _Dictionnaire geographique_, the
original capital of the Vermandui, later eclipsed by the Roman city of
Augusta, then regained some of its importance under the Francs.
M. was first bishop of Vermand, which the Catholic Encyclopedia

"Vermand, a little city without defence" from which M. moved the seat of the
diocese to the more defensible Noyon. (Does this make him the first bishop of
Noyon?)
the "Vermandois" error is also found on this site
http://www.saintpatrickdc.org/ss/0608.htm (scroll down to "Medard of Noyon")
but it redeemes itself more than somewhat by noting that M. is "invoked on
behalf of idiots and lunatics..."
he therefore should receive special veneration by certain members of this list
and all scholars who study Chartres.
