medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear colleagues:
A graduate student I'm working with has become fascinated by the
Arian controversy---and the role Germanic Arianism played in
complicating German/Roman accommodation within the Roman Empire. We
can find LOTS of material about the fourth-century Arian controversy,
ranging from the popular *When Jesus Became God* by Rubenstein to
treatises by Athanasius, etc. But I'm having trouble coming up with
anything that more than skims the surface of the German Arians---on
the line of "and X Germanic tribe was Arian, and this complicated
relations with the rulers' catholic Christian subjects." Period.
The best coverage I know of is in Herwig Wolfram's *The Roman Empire
and its Germanic Peoples*, which is fascinating but far from a
systematic treatment. Can anybody give some suggestions on reading
material?
With thanks,
Phyllis
