medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The capitals _were_ chiselled down. In 1837 large parts of the upper
church were stuccoed and then marbelized (painted so as to resemble
variegated marbles). In the course of this labor all the capitals of
the double columns were scraped down in order to receive overlays of
stucco that were then molded to appear as Corinthian capitals. These
false elegances were removed during a later stage of the restoration of
1950-60. See Benedetto Ronchi, _La cattedrale di Trani_ (Fasano di
Brindisi: Schena, 1985), pp. 59-61 and photograph 51 (from 1955) on p.
73.
The only small consolation in all this is that these capitals were not
the originals but instead were baroque "copies" installed in 1637.
(Ronchi, op. cit., p. 57).
Best,
John Dillon
