...and that's because of the fasten discipline. In ancient times
the faithfuls had to fast during the whole day, then they had Mass
in the late afternoon (after None). then Vesper and only in the
evening could they eat. Muslims took over this usage for their
Ramadan. Since the XIIIth Century it becomes usual to anticipate
Vespers in the morning in order to have Mass before twelve,
but the rightful fasten still required only one complete meal
over the day (before fasten was almost completely abolished
in the Sixties).
