well, it's all "decoration", i suppose.
and the elaborate folliage (which is quite unusual in continental tympana with
human figures) could be seen as a "decorative statement".
it was one of the things which initially led me into the ditch of thinking
that the piece was Anglo-Saxon (and, i would maintain, it *is* found there as
a survival of the A-S love for suchlike vegetal meanderings).
but if you intend that there is anything frivolous about this "decoration",
i'd say that the burden of proof is on you to demonstrate that supposition.
these are serious, Sacred Images of a SuperNatural Reality which was
all-too-present to the middlevil psyche.
not just idle doodling by some monk on his lunch hour.
