medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It is my sad duty to report, for those who may not already have heard,
that Fr. Basil Pennington, OCSO, passed away on June 3 from
complications arising from an April car crash. This was made note of at
the Cistercian Studies sessions in last month's Medieval Congress. Fr.
Basil was hard to miss at Medieval Congress when he attended (I think he
missed the last couple of years due to abbatial duties); he was the
fellow who looked like Santa Claus in a Trappist monk's habit. He was
both a renowned Cistercian scholar who published numerous articles and
books, both on the history of the Cistercian Order, and on the
application of medieval spirituality for modern Christians in the form
known as Centering Prayer; he would often give talks on this at Medieval
Congress in the evenings.
Thiose of us who knew and loved him will miss him greatly. Here is a
