medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. June) is the feast day of:
Vitus (d. c. 300) Legend tells that Vitus was the only son of a
senator who lived in Sicily. He converted to Christianity at age 12.
Before long, word of the conversion and all of V's miracles reached
the governor. V managed to flee with his tutor and a servant. They
went to Rome, where V exorcised an evil spirit from Diocletian's
son---but when V refused to sacrifice to the state gods, the emperor
decided he was a sorcerer. So V (and tutor and servant) were
tortured in various ingenious but completely unsuccessful ways. They
were freed when a massive storm destroyed a number of temples. They
eventually made their way back (with angelic guidance) to Lucania,
and died there. Historical core of all this? V., Modestus, and
Crescentius were Christians who were martyred in Lucania. A
large-scale devotion to V spread in Germany after his relics were
translated to Corvey (Saxony) in 836. He is one of the 14 Holy
Helpers.
Orsiesius (d. c. 380) Orsiesius was a disciple of Pachomius. While
he was still young, Pachomius appointed O an abbot, and when
Pachomius' successor at Tabennisi died almost immediately he was
elected abbot there. But O was so strict that some of the monks
rebelled and he resigned, but eventually became abbot again.
Landelinus (d. 686) The Frankish Landelinus had a wild youth but
converted and became a hermit in the area of Lobbes. He formed his
disciples into a number of monasteries.
Bardo (1053) Bardo was a monk of Fulda who became abbot successively
of Kaiserswerth and Horsfeld before being named archbishop of Mainz.
He was noted for his austere life and care for the poor, as well as
his attacks on clerical incelibacy and simony.
