medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

questions, and a lot of papers were published in the Cahiers de Mythologie

also published in that curious journal is a two-part study of The Chartrain
Cephalophore, St. Cheron:

Abbé Guy VILLETTE : Saint-Chéron des Champs, p. 50
vol. CX
Abbé Guy VILLETTE : Saint-Chéron des Champs - Seconde partie, p. 79
circa 1970, i believe.
the late Guy Villette --brother to a somewhat better known Jean-- was a
specialist in "toponymie"; he retired back to Chartres from the faculty of the
Institute Catholique in Paris and worked in the last years of his life on the
toponomes of the Eure-et-Loir, in a series of little scholarly monographs
which were available in memeographed typescript copies in various libraries
around the city when i consulted them in the '80s.
i'm not sure whether they have subsequently been "published" in the normal
sense of the word, and his work on St. Chéron might be the only one which has
gained a (somewhat) wider diffusion.
St. Chéron, as Villette uncovers him, was a complete fabrication, based on a
connection between the gallo-roman cemetery on a hill southeast of the city,
the famous Boatman of the Underworld and a pious legend which was promulgated
by the monks who inhabited the cemetery later involving the story of an early
evangelist in the region who set off from Chartres on the road to Paris and
was set upon by brigands a few leagues out of town (at the lieu-dit
"Saint-Chéron-du-Chemin"), beheaded and returned (nearly) to the city, head
in hands, ending up in the cemetery where a church was dedicated to him.
