Apologies for Cross Posting to lis-maps and carto-soc
Dear all
The Soviet Military maps of Great Britain are a hot topic these days!
Anyone who listens to BBC Radio 4 will have heard the frequent trailers for
a programme on these maps (most notably those of Blackpool) which is to be
to be broadcast on the evening of Monday 9 May, 8.00-8.30pm. The programme
is called 'Balalaikas in Blackpool' and more details are available at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/proginfo/pdfs/radio/week19/bbcradiowk19_mon.pdf
I understand that the Daily Telegraph is also planning to run this story on
Monday.
The Times ran a story on Monday 2 May claiming that the Soviet maps of
Blackpool were not created by the Russians but by the Blackpool
Illuminations publicity department - an interesting interpretation! The
story can be read at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1594493,00.html
Those of you who are not members of the Charles Close Society
(http://www.charlesclosesociety.org.uk/ccshome.htm) might be interested to
know that the most recent issue of their newsletter 'Sheetlines' (no 72,
April 2005) included the first of two articles on the Soviet military maps
of Great Britain - it is an interesting read.
