At St Andrews, the student includes a risk assessment as part of their
research proposal. The student, supervisor plus the School Safety Officer
then counter sign a risk assessment form for field work. If it is deemed
safe then a student can work on their own.
So what is deemed "safe"? The bottom line is that we won't approve lone
students to work in remote environments where they can't leave a daily
route card with a named person.........but as you can imagine there are no
fixed definitions.
