We are reviewing our policy at Faculty level concerning whether
undergraduate and postgraduate students should be allowed to work on
their own in the field. The current view in Galway is that
undergraduates should, for safety reasons, work in pairs on adjoining
areas when doing independent geological mapping. However, it is felt
that postgraduates should be encouraged to develop the ability to work
responsibly and safely on their own. We do supply a compulsory 2 day
independently certified field safety training course for all students.
I would be most grateful for feedback on the situation elsewhere.
Do you allow field work to be undertaken by an unaccompanied person?
If so, under what conditions?
Thanks.
