medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Saturday, 7. May is the feast day of:
Domitian (d. c. 560) Domitian was a Gallo-Roman, elected bishop of
Tongres. He moved the see to Maestricht and was a successful
missionary in the Meuse Valley.
Liudhard (d. c. 602) Liudhard was the chaplain of Bertha, the
Frankish princess who was shipped to Kent to marry King Ethelbert.
According to tradition, he helped prepare the way (sounds properly
vague) for Augustine of Canterbury's missionary venture. Legend
tells that L. eventually became archbishop of Canterbury (almost
certainly false) and tells that he was murdered at Cambrai while on
his way back from a pilgrimage to Rome.
Serenicus and Serenus (d. c. 669) These brothers were patricians of
Spoleto. They became monks in Rome but eventually went to a forest
in Francia and became hermits. They both ended up as monastic
founders and successful abbots.
John of Beverly (d. 721) John studied at Canterbury then returned to
northern England to become a monk at Whitby. He was named bishop of
Hexham in 687 and transferred to York in 705. Bede seems to have
like John, telling about his holiness and many miracles. By 717 J.
was in poor health, and he retired to the monastery of Beverly (which
he had founded). J's shrine was one of England's most popular
pilgrimage sites. He was canonized in 1037.
