Hi all,
Topical Session T12 - "Tectonic inversion and crustal reactivation in
orogenic belts: examples from the Apennine-Maghrebide system", at the
GEOITALIA 2005 Conference, to be held on Sept. 23rd-25th in Spoleto, Italy.
We welcome thematic contributions on the processes of fault and shear zone
reactivation in regions that have experienced tectonic inversion.
Multidisciplinal studies, with field investigation, numerical and physical
analogue modelling, seismic line interpretation, are greatly appreciated.
Special attention will be dedicated to examples from the
Apennine-Maghrebide system, but field cases from other inverted settings
are equally welcome. Additional information is to be found queued to this
message.
Keynote Address: Rob Butler (University of Leeds, UK).
Please note that the deadline for abstract submission is June 13. You can
register at the following web-site:

We look very much forwards to receiving your contributions!!!

GEOITALIA 2005 - Topical Session T12 "Tectonic inversion and crustal
reactivation in orogenic belts: examples from the Apennine-Maghrebide
system"

Changes in tectonic regimes are common during deformation of continental
crust, and the effects of such changes are significant within most orogenic
belts, because of the relatively long geological history of these crustal
provinces. The processes related to changes in tectonic regimes, indicated
as inversion processes, generally inhibit reactivation or reworking of
regionally important faults, shear zones and deformation belts. Significant
examples are reported from the frontal or outer zones of orogenic belts,
whose geometry may result from the interaction of contractional structures,
such as thrusts and related folds, with pre-existing synsedimentary normal
faults (positive inversion). Other examples are described in the innermost
orogenic provinces, where previously stacked tectonic units have been
modified by post-orogenic extensional deformations (negative inversion).
Less documented, but not less important in defining the final shape of
orogenic belts, are cases of strike-slip, transpressional or transtensional
reactivation of pre-existing structures.
Tectonic inversion and reactivation processes have severely influenced the
geometry and geodynamic evolution of most perimediterranean orogenic belts.
This session aims at illustrating the behaviour of pre-existing faults and
deformation zones, and at evaluating the role of these structures during
the construction of collision mountain belts, with examples mainly derived
from the Apennine-Maghrebide orogenic system. Contributions from structural
analysis at different scales, integrated studies on the relationships
between tectonics and sedimentation, analogue modelling and imaging of deep
structures through seismic profile interpretations are welcome. It is
expected that the presented contributions, subject to peer review
procedures, are collected in a thematic volume or journal of international
diffusion.

I processi legati all'inversione di
strutture distensive sinsedimentarie (inversione positiva). Altri esempi
collisione continentale (inversione negativa).
appenninico-maghrebide. Sono benvenuti contributi di analisi strutturale
condotta a scale diverse, studi integrati sui rapporti fra tettonica e
sedimentazione, lavori di modellizzazione analogica e ricostruzioni di
strutture profonde tramite interpretazione di profili sismici. E' previsto
sessione.
