medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. April) is the feast day of:
Mary Cleophas (1st cent.) This Mary was the mother of James the
Younger and Joseph. She was present at the crucifixion and was one
of the women at the Tomb. Legend tells that she went to Spain and
died at Ciudad Rodrigo.
Acacius (d. c. 420) Acacius was bishop of Amida in Mesopotamia. He
was especially concerned for Persian prisoners of war, and even
melted down his church's altar gear to pay ransoms. The Persian shah
Bahram V was so impressed by A. that he ended the persecution of
Christians.
Waldetrudis (d. c. 688) Waldetrudis (Waudru) was a member of a
saintly family, the daughter of SS Walbert and Bertilia and sister of
St. Aldegunus of Maubeuge. He was married, but he became a monk and
she became a recluse. Eventually W. founded a convent at
Chateaulieu, the core of the modern city of Mons. She was famous for
charity and miracles. Her four children were also saints.
Hugh of Rouen (d. 730) Hugh was a son of the duke of Burgundy and a
nephew of Charles Martel. Richly endowed with benefices, H. was
bishop of Rouen, Paris, and Bayeux, as well as abbot of Fontenelle
and Jumieges. H. is supposed to have used the wealth from all these
honors wisely, and in time he resigned from all of them to become a
simple monk at Jumieges.
Gaucherius (d. 1140) Gaucherius and his friend Germond became
hermits in the forest of Limoges when they were eighteen. Gaucherius
attracted many disciples, whom he organized into a monastery at
Aureil and a convent. G. was canonized in 1194.
James of Padua and companions (blessed) (d. 1322) A group of four
Franciscan missionaries, killed in India while en route to evangelize
in China. Their cult was confirmed in 1894.
