medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The expression 'power of the keys' (potestas clavium) comes from Matthew 16, 19 (cf. also Isaiah 22, 20). In patristic and medieval exegesis several distinctions are made:
1) between a 'clavis potestatis', given to St. Peter and a 'clavis scientiae', given to St. Paul
2) between a 'clavis ordinis' and a 'clavis jurisdictionis' (cf. Thomas Aquinas, Super Sent., lib. 4 d. 19 q. 1 a. 1 qc. 3 co). The first one is sacramental (forgiveness of sins, bestowal of grace), the second one has to do with governing the church (excommunication).
I am not sure, but I assume that the gold and silver keys refer to the second distinction.
The Roman God Janus was also said to have a gold and a silver key. They also occur in the official coat of arms of the Vatican', and they are mentioned by Dante (Purg. IX, 124-126).

It is a common place. In the 12th-century _Historia Compostellana_
archbishop Gelmírez is described as a labourer in the vineyard. And
flamant Pope Benedictus XVI says the same of himself
