medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
What looks like a cat bed or cat carrier is a lantern carried by the devil
to light the way for the evil that men do. The person with "flames" for hair
(the devil) was at first misidentified as a Jew. The person menaced, or
seemingly menaced, by Saint Pater, is identified as either Malchus, the
servant, or the young man who fled naked from the "arrest" scene. Perrecy
was the third of the priories attached to Fleury. The priory was bequeathed
to Fleury by Eccard, legatee of Childebrand, who (Eccard) founded the priory
(then prieuré de Notre-Dame et de Saint-Benoît) in 840. In 1784 the church
became the parish church of Sts. Peter and Benedict. The relating of what
happened between 840 and 1784 would make your mailbox explode, so I'll spare
you the details.

p.s. The whole Gethsemane sequence is one of the most moving sculptures I've
ever seen. It would be difficult to photograph as a whole, since it goes
around a corner, but I'm hoping the webmaster at art-roman manages.
