medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Giovanna Fiume has written a book about this saint:
Il santo Moro. I processi di canonizzazione di Benedetto da Palermo (1595-1807), Milan 2002
It's quite fascinating, and includes material on St. Rosalie and other "competing" saints, as
well as a discussion of slavery, ethnicity and saints, confraternities and veneration of St. Benedict
in the Americas. She also has an extremely interesting article in a volume I am editing, which of course I
canīt distribute, though I hope the volume will be out by this time next year. On the basis of the
article, I have been trying to find a publisher for a translation of her
book. We have an excellent translator; we have the book; all that is needed is an official expression
of interest from a publisher which Prof. Fiume can use to apply to her own university
for funds with which to pay the translator. I will be more than happy to forward her
CV and an English version of the table of contents of the volume to anyone who might
know of a likely publisher (or be interested in knowning more about the Italian volume).
The English title, SAINT BENEDICT THE MOOR. THE STORY OF SICILY'S BLACK SAINT.
gives a better impression of the scope of the work than the Italian one, which sounds as if
it might only be of interest to canon lawyers.
