medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (19. March) is the feast day of:
Joseph (1st cent.) Joseph last appears in the gospel record when
Jesus was twelve years old and went with his family to Jerusalem.
The Protoevangelium of James says Joseph was an old man when he
married Mary, and that is how he usually appears in medieval art.
Veneration of Joseph didn't become widespread in western Christendom
until the fifteenth century; his feast was added to the Roman
calendar in 1479. In modern times, J. has had honors heaped on him:
Pius IX declared him "patron of the universal church," Leo XIII
declared that he was second only to Mary among the saints, Benedict
XV named him protector of workingmen, Pius XI declared him the patron
of social justice, and Pius XII established a second feast of J---of
St. Joseph the Worker, celebrated on May 1.
John the Syrian of Pinna (aka John of Panaca) John was a Syrian
hermit who fled to Italy to escape Monophysite persecution. He
founded monasteries at Pinna and Pesaro.
Landoald and companions (d. c. 668) Landoald was apparently a
Lombard, a companion of St. Amand in his missionary work in the
Netherlands. L. was very successful in the Maastricht area.
