medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Phyllis Jestice <[log in to unmask]>
> Today (16. March) is the feast day of:
> Gregory Makar (d. c. 1010) The Armenian Gregory became a monk and in
time bishop of Nicropolis. But he didn't like it, and went all the
way to Italy and then France to evade his duties; he became a recluse
at Pithiviers, famed for spiritual wisdom and miracles.
how curious, and what itchy feet this guy must have had, to travel from
Armenia, through Italy, to a small castrum in France.
Pithiviers is between Orleans and Etampes

it is a place i've always been curious about but too lazy to actually
research.
maybe some day this pretty good page will be brought up to the early 11th c.
and give us a clue as to why a peripetetic Armenian monk/bishop should end up
there
