medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (16. March) is the feast day of:
Julian of Anazarbus (d. c. 302) Julian was a Cilician, arrested
during Diocletian's persecution. He must have done something to make
the authorities especially angry, since he was exhibited all over
Cilicia for a year, before being sewn into a sack with scorpions and
vipers and thrown into the sea. His body ended up in Antioch, so
he's sometimes called J of Antioch instead of his native city of
Anazarbus.
Abraham Kidunaia (6th cent.) The son of wealthy parents in Edessa,
Abraham ran away to escape an arranged marriage and became a hermit.
The bishop of Edessa eventually talked him into becoming a missionary
to the non-Christian community of Beth-Kiduna nearby. A. preached,
destroyed cult statues, got beaten up and driven out, came back and
preached some more, etc. Eventually he did indeed convert the town,
after which he returned to his hermitage.
Gregory Makar (d. c. 1010) The Armenian Gregory became a monk and in
time bishop of Nicropolis. But he didn't like it, and went all the
way to Italy and then France to evade his duties; he became a recluse
at Pithiviers, famed for spiritual wisdom and miracles.
Heribert (d. 1021) Heribert was a canon of Worms who served as Otto
III's chancellor and was rewarded in 998 with the archiepiscopate of
Cologne. He also served Henry II as chancellor. H. is one of those
imperial churchmen who managed to combine full-time state service
with full-time religious stuff---besides imperial service, H. founded
the monastery of Deutz, cared for the poor, enforced clerical
discipline, and even is reputed to have performed miracles. He was
canonized sometime between 1073 and 1075.
