medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. March) is the feast day of:
Sixtus III (d. 440) Sixtus became pope in 432. It seems that he was
an argumentative pontiff: he argued with Nestorians; he argued with
Pelagians; he argued with the emperor, who wanted to transfer Illyria
to the patriarchate of Constantinople (i.e., steal it from Roman
oversight).
Guntramnus (d. 592) Gregory of Tours tells that Guntramnus was king
of Burgundy. He was a just ruler, endowed churches, built
monasteries, and supported three church synods.
Gwendoline (d. c. 750) Gwendoline was a daughter of a duke of Alsace
and niece of St. Ottilia. She became abbess of Niedermunster.
Tutilo (d. c. 915) Tutilo was a monk of St. Gall, who became head of
the school there. T. was noted for his learning and his many
talents: he was an orator, poet, painter, architect, metalworker,
musician, and composer. Wow.
