medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. March) is the feast day of:
Leobinus (d. c. 558) Leobinus (or Lubin) was born near Poitiers. He
spent time as a hermit and then joined a monastery near Lyons.
Raiders attacked the place and tortured L. for a while to force him
to reveal where the monastery's treasure was hidden. He recovered
and spent some years going back and forth---hermit then abbot of
Brou, then monk at Lerins, then abbot at Brou again. Finally he
became bishop of Chartres.
Eutychius (d. 741) Eutychius was a patrician Greek, captured while
fighting Arabs. When the Arab army was defeated by the Christians,
he had E. and several companions tortured and killed. This counts as
martyrdom, because they were offered life if they would apostacize.
Matilda (d. 968) Matilda was the wife of King Henry I of Germany and
mother of Otto I. Two near-contemporary vitae attest to her piety
and charity. After she was widowed in 936, she seems to have spent a
lot of time stirring up trouble between Otto I and his brother Henry,
but also founded three convents and a monastery, including
Quedlinburg (which, by the way, is an architectural masterpiece,
although last summer the crypt (with M's tomb) was closed for
repairs).
James of Viterbo (blessed) (d. 1308) James was an Augustinian Hermit
who got his doctorate at the University of Paris and when on to teach
there and in Naples. He became bishop of Naples in 1303. J's cult
was confirmed in 1911.
