medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. March) is the feast day of:
Peter, Gorgonius, and Dorotheus (d. 303) Members of Diocletian's
staff in Nicomedia. Peter, a chamberlain, refused to sacrifice to
the state gods and was tortured; Gorgonius and Dorotheus were two
other officials who objected and proclaimed that they, too, were
Christians. D and G were tortured and then executed; Peter was saved
for last and roasted to death on a spit.
Paul Aurelian (d. c. 573) Paul Aurelian was a native of southern
Wales. He became a hermit at age 16, attracted the suspicious number
of 12 disciples, and went off to evangelize first in Wales and then
in Brittany. He founded a monastery on the island of Batz. Paul
spent several years as bishop of Leon, but resigned and returned to
Batz.
Theophanes the Chronicler (d. 817) The Constantinopolitan Theophanes
was a rich man who was raised at the imperial court. But after some
years of married life, he and his wife both turned to asceticism. T.
went and built monasteries, eventually becoming abbot of Mount
Sigriana. He came into conflict with the emperor Leo the Armenian on
that vexed issue of iconoclasm, as a result of which T. was flogged,
imprisoned for two years, an then banished to Samothrace, where he
soon died of ill treatment. He wrote a chronicle of the period
284-813, for which he was given his nickname.
Alphege of Winchester (d. 951) Alphege "the Elder" or "the Bald" was
bishop of Winchester, perhaps most notable for ordaining St. Dunstan.
A. had a reputation for holiness and prophecy.
Seraphina (d. 1253) Seraphina was born to poor parents in San
Geminiano (Tuscany). She became paralyzed while still a girl,
winning a great reputation for patience in pain until her death.
