medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Bernadette
Thank you so much for your response. You are referring specifically to
Enda in your email, right? That is helpful, but I was particularly
interested in the claim with regard to Finian. I am familiar with the
argument that it was Finnian and not Ninian that founded Whithorn. This
is important to one part of my dissertation. Also, Clancy and others
have argued that there was only one Finnian, not two, and that this
Finnian founded both Moville and Clonard. I have not come across the
claim that Finnian was one of the founders of Irish monasticism, though,
so if you or anyone knows the source for this particular claim, I would
appreciate that information as well.
Thanks again.

Hi, Diane,
Since better informed members have not replied to this question:
Butler's
Lives of the Saints makes the same claim, and the Penguin Dictionary of
Saints (1965) says that his "settlement on Aranmore in Galway Bay ....
is
regarded as the first Irish monastery in the strict sense, 'the capital
of
the Ireland of the saints'".
