medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Here again is the somewhat smaller image from the mondes-normands site:
http://tinyurl.com/538o3
I read the relief as showing Adam pointing to his mouth with his index
finger while the other fingers on his right hand are curled back.
Neither Adam nor Eve seems open-mouthed in this composition. And Adam
is definitely not eating. As the fruit held by Eve appears to be
intact, I would say that Adam is not _yet_ eating. Does his hand
gesture indicate intent? I'm not learned enough in these matters to say
yea or nay to that.
Best again,
John Dillon
