Subject: Good Practice Guide for those involved in the development of
cultural heritage Web resources and service

Dear All,

The NOF-digitise programme provided lottery funding to support the
digitisation and development of 150 Web sites offering access to
cultural heritage resources. The resources can be accessed from the
EnrichUK portal available at http://www.enrichuk.net/

Technical support for the projects was provided by UKOLN and AHDS,
through the NOF-digitise Technical Advisory Service (NOF-TAS), working
closely with MLA who provided expert advice to the Big Lottery Fund.
During its lifetime NOF-TAS producing a wide range of materials and
gained valuable experience and understanding of the support needs of
digital library development work within the cultural heritage sector.

In order to ensure that the resources and experiences are not lost UKOLN
are launching a Web site which offers a range of advice to organisations
involved in similar development activities. The resources are based on
those developed for the NOF-TAS service, and will be complemented with
others based on experiences gained in supporting similar work within the
cultural heritage and higher and further education sectors.

We intend to continue to maintain and develop these resources in order
to support new digital library development work across the sector.

The resources, which are known as the Good Practice Guide, are available
at http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/interop-focus/gpg/

We are grateful to BIG (the successor organisation to the New
Opportunities Fund, NOF) and the MLA (Council for Museums, Libraries and
Archives) for their support.

Regards

Marieke Guy

Communities of practice: building, supporting and evaluating
Speaker: Elizabeth Lank
Dates: 11 March 2005

There is significant evidence that the most effective means of transferring
knowledge is people to people rather than people to or from computers. Many
organisations that have invested in technology tools to share information
are now adding a further strand to their knowledge management strategy,
namely support for and facilitation of 'communities of practice' and other
cross-boundary groups.

This one day workshop will help you to identify the different types of
communities that emerge in organisations; how they can be supported and
encouraged to share knowledge and information in order to be able to
contribute more effectively to the business strategies; the practical steps
necessary to turn them into strategic assets for the organisation and how to
evaluate the value they are contributing to the organisation. The day is
highly interactive and includes time for the participants to share stories
from their own experience, as well as hearing an in-depth case study from a
visiting practitioner.

Course fee: GBP495+VAT which includes a buffet lunch (always highly rated!)
and refreshments
