medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The cross over Adam's bones is quite conventional. The main examples of the
cross in the place of Christ that I can recall are in S. Apollinaire in
Classe & one of the baptisterys. There is also a mosaic in Rome -- Sta.
Agnese? Possibly the original image was so damaged something had to be
done, & none of the monks could paint, so they opted for a cross which
didn't require much skill.

The only other scene I've seen of this sort - sort of - is a much later one,
at Strasbourg:

Scroll down for the central west facade scene: the Passion from start to
finish. Christ carrying his cross triumphantly is directly over the
crucifixion scene, and the crucifixion cross is planted over Adam's
skeleton. Perhaps that additional superfluous (Italian) cross is/was meant
to represent the triumph of the cross. But as the page said (much more
elegantly), someone did a number on that painting. It looks as though it was
effected by a drunk committee.
