medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. March) is the feast day of:
Acacius (d. c. 251) Acacius may have been bishop of Antioch or
Militene. Cetainly he was prominent in the Christian circle of
Antioch. He was summoned by the local Roman governor, and took part
in a dialogue on Christianity compared to other religions; this is
still extant. Acacius refused to sacrifice to the state gods and
also refused to give the names of his fellow Christians, so was sent
to prison. Legend tells that Emperor Decius was so impressed when he
was sent the report of the trial that he promoted the governor and
pardoned A.
Benjamin (d. c. 421) Benjamin was a deacon, imprisoned for preaching
Christianity in Persia during the persecution of Shahs Yezdigerd and
Varanes. The eastern Roman emperor, however, intervened and won B's
release, on the promise that B would stop preaching. But of course
he started again, was arrested and tortured, refused to shut up, and
was impaled.
Guy of Pomposa (d. 1046) Guy was a native of Ravenna who gave all
his goods to the poor and became a hermit. Soon entered the
monastery of Pomposa near Ferrara and eventually became abbot there.
He attracted so many disciples that they had to build another
monastery. G. ended his life as a hermit again.
