It is also the Feast Day of St Aldate ("Approved Cult" - I think I have
asked before as to what degree of non-existence is required for a cult to be
*not* approved, but didn't get a satisfactory answer.)
St Aldate is supposed to have been Bishop of Gloucester in the fifth (or
sixth) century. There are only two churches dedicated to St Aldate: in
Oxford and Gloucester. Unfortunately, both were located next to the "Old
Gate"! Were our ancestors more credulous, or did they have a sense of
humour? As at least the Oxford church was known as "St Old", I suspect the
latter.
