medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
John,
Wolkan's edition is not always reliable, & I suspect you are right.
Thank you.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In what language(s) would a "Scythian name" be expressed?
'Pirricheos' could be a garble for 'Ripheos' (possibly a correction 'p'
[plus insert sign] had been placed before a wrongly written 'richeos'
and was misconstrued by a subsequent copyist or printer). The _Riphaei
montes_ / _Riphaeus mons_ are/is classically what one now calls "the
Urals". For an example of the use of this term in defining the
boundaries of Scythia, go to:
http://www.coe.int/T/E/Cultural_Co-
operation/culture/Completed_projects/Legends/hungary.asp
TinyURL for this: http://tinyurl.com/4zhsa
and scroll down to (or use your browser to find):
"Scythia is a region situated in Europe and stretches eastwards. On one
side it is bounded by the Northern Sea and on the other by the Riphaeus
Mountains; to the east is Asia and to the west is the River Etel,
namely the Don."
That is an extract in translation from the Hungarian KÉPES KRÓNICKA
(illustrated chronicle), which could well be drawing on an ancient or
Byzantine treatment of the Scyths that also informs your passage.
Best,
John Dillon
