medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. February) is the feast day of:
Proterius (d. 457) Proterius became patriarch of Alexandria when his
predecessor was deposed as a Eutychian heretic. The city divided
into factions and Proterius ended up stabbed to death in a riot.
Hilary (d. 468) Hilary was a Sardinian who was elected pope in 461.
He was a very active pontiff, working on ecclesiastical discipline,
the church organization of Gaul and Spain, holding councils to settle
disputes between bishops, rebuilding Roman churches, etc. He
publicly rebuked Emperor Anthemius for allowing one of his favorites
to spread heresy.
Oswald of Worcester (d. 992) Oswald was of Danish descent. He
became a priest at Winchester, went to France to become a monk, and
ended up being appointed bishop of Worcester. O. founded several
monasteries and was an active participant in England's tenth-century
ecclesiastical reform movement. O. was appointed archbishop of York
in 972; he retained Worcester while running York.
