medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (17. February) is the feast day of:
Theodulus (d. 309) Theodulus was an old man, a high official in the
service of the governor of Palestine. When the governor found out
that T. had been visiting Christians in prison, he had T. condemned
and crucified.
Loman (d. c. 450??) An early Irish saint. More pedestrian scholars
think he was a seventh-century bishop of Trim. More spectacular
legend tells that L. was a nephew of St. Patrick who accompanied Pat
to Ireland. He converted the ruler of the region around Trim to
Christianity, along with all his family, and the chief gave land for
a church in return.
Finan (d. 661) Finan was an Irishman who became a monk at Iona. He
succeeded Aidan as bishop of Lindisfarne. He seems to have been an
active missionary, with the help of his friend King Oswy of
Northumbria; he baptized both King Penda of the Middle Angles and
King Sigebert of the East Saxons.
Evermod (d. 1178) Evermod became a Premonstratensian canon under
Norbert and in 1134 succeeded N as head of the monastery of
Gottesgnaden, then abbot of Magdeburg, and in 1154 became first
bishop of Ratzeburg. He is called the apostle of the Wends.
Seven Founders of the Servite Order (13th cent.) A group of wealthy
Florentines who got together and decided to found a new religious
order.
