medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. February) is the feast day of:
Scholastica (d. 543) Scholastica was the sister (maybe twin) of
Benedict of Nursia. She founded a convent at Plombariola near Monte
Cassino and served as abbess there.
Trumwin (d. c. 690) Trumwin was an Englishman who became bishop of
the southern Picts. His center was the monastery of Abercorn on the
Firth of Forth. He had to flee when the Northumbrians were defeated
by the Picts in 685 and settled at Whitby.
Austreberta (d. 704) Austreberta was the daughter of a Frankish
count, born near Therouanne. She ran away from home to escape
marriage and became a nun at Port (Abbeville). She served as abbess
there and later at Pavilly.
William of Maleval (d. 1157) William was apparently a fighting man
before reforming his life; his early career must have been rather
dissolute, to judge from the fact that he made a pilgrimage to Rome
and the pope ordered him on a further penitential pilgrimage to
Jerusalem. After his return (8 years later), W. lived as a hermit in
Tuscany. He was famous for prophecy and miracles. A circle of his
disciples developed into the Hermits of St. William (Guilielmites).
