medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. February) is the feast day of:
Besas, Cronion, and Julian (d. 250) Julian was a gouty Alexandrian,
burned to death as a Christian. With him was Cronion, one of his
litterbearers, and Besas, a soldier who stood up for J. and C. on
their way to execution.
Thalelaeus the Hermit (d. 284) Thalelaeus was the son of a Roman
general. T. became a physician---one of those good Christian
physicians famed in legend for their gratis services to the poor. He
fled persecution, was caught and put on trial. First they tried to
drown him, but when that failed (he was too buoyant??) he was
decapitated. Two bystanders, perhaps officers in charge of the
execution, were executed along with T. for being too compassionate.
Leander of Seville (d. c. 600) Leander was a Hispano-Roman noble;
his three siblings are also saints. L. became a monk, got into
diplomatic business for King Leovigild, and in 584 was appointed
bishop of Seville. L. got into trouble with Leovigild (over L's
execution of Prince Hermenegild) and spent some time in exile. But
he return to triumphantly usher in catholic Christianity to Spain in
the reign of Reccared. He personally converted many of the Arian
bishops and is credited with bringing the Visigoths and Suevi to
catholicism. L. also reformed the Spanish liturgy and wrote a rule
for nuns. The Spanish church regards L. as a doctor of the church.
Alnoth (d. c. 700) Alnoth was a cowherd of the convent of Weedon
(England). He was renowned for his holiness and became a hermit.
Bandits murdered him.
John of Gorze (d. 974) John was a prosperous noble of Lorraine who
became an adult convert to the religious life. In 933 he was one of
the re-founders of the Lotharingian monastery of Gorze, serving as
abbot from 960 until his death.
