medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'd be very interested to know of what's been written on the idea of the
moral eye- presumably this is the same idea as that written about by Michael
Baxandall (Painting and Experience..), where I seem to recall he discussed a
devotional text on the subject, (possibly Peter of Limoges' one- I don't
have Baxandall handy to check). Was this an idea which passed into general
currency, and round about when does it first crop up? My interest is a
little vague, but I think I may be finding reflections of the notion in art
c.1300, and would like to know a bit more
