Pity the little goldmines
Got a few quid to invest? Don't miss this opportunity to make a tidy profit
from society's most damaged children

"An exciting proposal arrives in the post - an opportunity to invest in a
"lucrative niche of the healthcare sector". Readers might want to grab this
hot tip while stocks last. It is also a sobering encounter with the world
of privatisation.

"Here it gets financially interesting. "Due to the high level of
supervision these children require, the weekly fees are substantial,
ranging from £3,000 to £6,500 per child. A typical house will cost around
£150,000, with an average fit-out cost of approximately £15,000." The
report adds: "These houses need very little work to attain the standard and
facilities required to care for children."
"The returns are extremely attractive …"

"But why, I asked him, would councils spend all this money when they could
halve their costs by running their own care homes? "Well, many closed down
all their homes and went in for fostering, but now find they do need homes
as well. Some councils want to place children far away."

"What could that money buy? The lowest figure for a looked-after child -
£3,000 a week or £156,000 a year - would buy a place at Eton eight times
over. Or a place at Eton, with a fulltime personal mentor and intensive
top-quality psychotherapy. Or a room at the Ritz with a full-time private
tutor. Or a place in some of the expensive but excellent children's
therapeutic communities that closed down over the years. "

"I'm serving a 20 year sentence for drug related charges and firearm by
convicted felon. I participate in the Bridges Therapeutic Community, a
substance abuse program at Roederer Correctional Complex at LaGrange.
Through this program I have gained the self-esteem, confidence and skills
that have not only rehabilitated me, but will also prepare myself for life
outside the prison bars. "
