At a rough guess Phil, he would have installed and
maintained the signalling equipment for shaft signals
and also haulage road signals.ie bells, bare wires and
the old LeClanche batteries.
In my time we had bare wire signals along rope haulage
roads, as well as pull wire and highly inductive loop
radio signalling equipment all worked on by the
electrical staff. Before the advent of employing
electricians, I'd say the fellow worked on all the
underground signal systems.
