A question was asked about the future of Houghton-le-Spring Mines Rescue
Station.
In tonight's 'Sunderland Echo' there is a full page article on the rescue
station, including five photos, which has been prompted by the closure of
Ellington.
The article is titled 'Digging for funds to save lives' and then goes on to
say '...last week's announcement the region's last remaining coal mine is
closing, means funding for the emergency crews is slowly drying up'.
The station is still responsible for providing cover for the mines Ayle East
and the British Gypsum mines, both in Cumbria, the pit at Beamish Museum and
the Killhope Lead Mining Museum.
The article may possibly be accessible on the newspaper's website at
www.sunderlandtoday.co.uk If it is not and any list member is particularly
interested in this then I will do my best to transcribe the article if I am
contacted 'off-list'.
