medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
totally OT re Sarum, vergers, wands, door kickers, beat walkers, beatniks,
tennis matches (whether doubles or singles), etc., i thought this an opportune
moment to hitch a ride via this string across the pons asinorum and ask
whether anyone here might have an observation or two to offer about the
depiction of what i believe to be [liturgical??] "processions" on several of
the "pilgrims' badges" from Chartres :

the scenes with the image of the Virgin being carried on a bier *may* reflect
a procession wherein the famous "black Virgin" of Chartres was carried in a
procession, and the architectural members just visible above and around the
statue *might* be shorthand for a procession which looked something like this
in practice (from a 16th c. "secular" procession in the Low Countries) :

in the Chartres badges which show somehthing else being carried on a bier

it is a question of the bejeweled reliquary which held the precious relic of
the _camisia_ of the BVM --both the Holy Shirt and the jewels are depicted on
the box.
below the bier is, curiously enough, a _denier chartrain_, a coin with the
distinctive, inegmatic device which later became incorporated into the "arms"
of the Commune of Chartres.
any thoughts on these precious objects would be most welcome.
best from here,
christopher
