medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I don't have the article before me either, and I haven't read it often
enough to be confident of my ability accurately to resume its content.
That said, I _have_ read it within the past year or so and my
recollection is that the dreams with which Lanzoni is primarily
concerned are indeed some of those recounted in specimens of Christian
hagiographical literature. But I'm not sure how often elements of these
are actually said to come from, rather than to be paralleled by,
non-Christian accounts of whatever origin. In the article, Lanzoni
shows himself to be very aware of how common significant dreams are in
surviving texts from the ancient Mediterranean world and treats the
Christian ones as cultural continuations of a long-ingrained mentality
(not his term, I suspect) operative in this region. The treatment I
remember best is that of the dream vouchsafed separately to both of
Conus of Diano's parents: though different in meaning, this has an
obvious similarity to the dream Hecuba is said to have had before giving
birth to Alexander/Paris. Lanzoni notes the similarity but treats the
ancient Greek example (which through ancient sources had a limited
diffusion in the medieval West) as an analogue rather than as a source.
Best,
John Dillon
