medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Just to add a couple of minor references to the excellent suggestions.
See Barbara Newman's publications (_Sister of Widsom....._ and her edited
volume with U. of California press) for Hildegard. Also for Hildegard and
preaching (and 12th c. preaching in general) see the brief but useful
comments by Caroline Bynum in _Jesus as Mother_, pp. 30-31 where the
subject is really preaching by canons and monks, and a growing opposition
to women as preachers. (I don't have Newman or other things by Bynum in
the Deans Office).
For Catherine of Siena, see the interesting article by Karen Scott, "St.
Catherine of Siena, 'Apostola'" in Church History, 61 (1992) 43-46
(available in JSTOR). See esp. p. 42 where Mary Magdalene ("an apostle in
love") is cited by C. in a letter as significant for the fact that she
preached in Marseilles. Mary Mag. also appears as an example because she
is an "apostle". One could go on......
