medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. January) is the feast day of:
Tigrius and Eutropius (d. 404) Eutropius was a lector at
Constantinople; Tigrius was a priest. Both were supporters of the
controversial John Chrysostom. They were accused of arson---setting
fire to both the cathedral and the senate building when Chrysostom
was banished. Both were tortured. Eutropius was then executed;
Tigrius was banished to Mesopotamia.
Caesaria (d. c. 529) Caesaria was a sister of Caesarius of Arles.
She became the first abbess of the convent her brother founded in c.
512, which rapidly grew to several hundred nuns.
Victorian (d. 558) Victorian was an Italian who founded the
monastery of Asan (later renamed San Victorian) in Aragon, serving as
abbot for many years.
Benedict Biscop (d. 690) Benedict Baducing was a Northumbrian noble.
He specialized in pilgrimage to Rome, making a first trip in 653.
When he returned he decided to devote himself to religion. Then he
went again, and on his way back became a monk at Lerins. On his
third trip, he came back with Theodore of Tarsus, who named B abbot
of SS Peter and Paul in Canterbury. Then he went to Rome yet again,
bringing back manuscripts and other religious paraphenalia. In 674
he founded the monastery of Wearmouth, and the sister community of
Jarrow in 682. Then he went to Rome a *fifth* time and brought back
more religious stuff and several expert monks for his new communities.
A modern saint: Antony Pucci (d. 1892) Antony (originally named
Eustace) was born to a peasant family of Poggiole (Italy). Against
his parents' wishes, he joined the Servite order. He became pastor
of Viareggio in 1847 and spent the rest of his life there. His
specialties were religious education and care for the sick and poor,
especially during major epidemics in 1854 and 1866. AP was canonized
in 1962.
