Apologies for cross-postings etc
Dear all,
EGU General Assembly
Vienna, Austria, 24 - 29 April 2005
www.copernicus.org/EGU/ga/egu05/index.htm
The EGU Vienna Abstract deadline is January 21st!
Please can I remind you of the session on Weak vs Strong Faults we have
scheduled at the EGU General Assembly in April (details below). We have
an exciting session lining up, with keynote presentations from Diane
Moore and Chris Scholz (subject to successful applications for support
from EGU).
Please consider attending and submitting an abstract!

TS17 Weak faults vs. strong faults: potential deformation mechanisms
in the upper crust
Convenors: Bob Holdsworth & Ernie Rutter
Faults fundamentally influence the distribution of deformation in the
lithosphere and, in the upper crust, seismicity. Yet, despite many years
of study, many fundamental issues concerning fault strength remain
unsolved. Whilst there is a concensus that fault zones in the ductile
regions of the crust are likely to be weak, it is still unclear whether
upper crustal faults weak or strong in either an absolute or relative
sense. A whole range of geological, geophysical and experimental studies
have been directed toward solving these problems, but many
misunderstandings and misconceptions have arisen due to the differing
resolutions and limitations of the different techniques applied.
Clearly, a cross-disciplinary approach is required and in the light of
the ongoing work in the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD),
it is therefore timely to bring together a broad range of geosciensts to
discuss the problem of fault rheology and strength in the upper crust.
Deadline for receipt of abstracts : 21 January 2005
Deadline for pre-registration : 8 April 2005

2) Click on Call for Papers Programme
3) Click on Tectonics & Structural Geology Programme
4) Scroll Down to session TS 17, click on Abstract submission....an from
now on, follow the prompts. Note that you may well have to register and
wait a short time for a user name and password before you can go on.
