An international conference on “Theory and Application of Fault-Related Folding in Foreland
Basins” is being held 25 June to 4 July 2005 and includes a one-week field trip to see spectacular
well-characterized examples of actively growing petroleum structures on both the north and
south sides of the Tianshan Mountains of western China (Tarim and Junggar Basins) and three
days of formal presentations in Beijing.
A website gives more details, including some photographs of field-trip area:

The conference is organized by PetroChina Limited Company and co-organized by Princeton
University, Tarim Oilfield Company, and Nanjing University.
The conference scope is meant to be broad, including [1] Advances in the theory and application
of fault-related folding to compressive settings worldwide, including but not limited to foreland
basins, regions of active tectonic deformation and areas of petroleum exploration & development;
as well as [2] Characteristics of foreland thrust and fold belts in central and western China.
The cost of meeting registration, including all field-trip expenses and round-trip air travel from
Beijing to western China, is very reasonable, $1000 for scientists and $800 for students. Housing
in Beijing are also very reasonable. It is possible for students and scientists from Europe or North
America to attend for $2000 total or less. For this reason significant international participation is
likely.
The confirmed international keynote speakers are:
Richard Allmendinger, Cornell University
Jean-Philippe Avouac, Caltech
Frank Bilotti, UNOCAL
Stuart Hardy, ICREA Barcelona
Aurélia Hubert-Ferrari, Université de Neuchâtel
Ken McClay, Royal Holloway
