medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. January) is the feast day of:
Sabinian (d. c. 275) Sabinian is regarded as the apostle of Troyes,
France. A rather spectacular legend tells that he was a native of
Samos who was converted along with his sister St. Sabina. The two
then went to Gaul, where Sabinian was such a successful evangelist
that Emperor Aurelian condemned him to death. He then went through
the five Chinese brothers routine so common in these
legends---burning him to death wouldn't work, neither would shooting
him full of arrows, so finally he was beheaded.
Valerius of Trier (d. c. 320) Valerius was a bishop of Trier; later
legend made him a disciple of St. Peter.
Gildas the Wise (d. c. 570) Gildas was a pan-Celtic figure, born in
what is now Scotland, then becoming a religious in Wales, then
visiting Ireland. As if that weren't enough, he ended his life as a
hermit in Brittany. Gildas was the author of one of the few
narrative sources for post-Roman Britain, *De excidio Britanniae*.
Sulpicius Severus (d. 591) SS was made bishop of Bourges in 584. He
is known for his vita of Martin of Tours.
Juniper (d. 1258) (Apparently not formally canonized, for which I for
one am grateful) Juniper was an early Franciscan who assisted in the
spread of the order. I found a story about him which I think is
disgusting: J. was nursing a sick man who really craved a pig's foot.
So J. cornered a pig in a nearby field, hacked off one of its feet,
and cooked it up for the invalid. The irate pig-owner complained to
J's superior. J. apologized so movingly that the farmer donated the
rest of the pig. Blech.
