medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
7. January is the feast day of:
Lucian of Antioch (d. 312) Lucian was a native of Samosata who
served as a priest in Antioch. He was a scriptural scholar and
prepared a critical edition of the Bible that was used by Jerome for
the Vulgate. L. was arrested in the persecution, imprisoned for a
long time, and finally tortured before being executed by sword at
Nicomedia.
Valentine (5th cent.) This Valentine was an abbot who became a
missionary bishop in Rhaetia.
Tillo (d. c. 702) Tillo was a Saxon, captured in a raid and ransomed
by St. Eligius. He became a monk at Solignac, worked as a missionary
in the Netherlands, then ended up as a recluse near Solignac.
Reinold (d. c. 960) The patron saint of stonemasons, Reinold was a
monk at St. Pantaleon, Cologne, where he was put in charge of
building. He was murdered by a group of stonemasons who were annoyed
because he worked so much harder than they did and made them look bad.
Canute Lavard (d. 1131) Canute was the son of Eric the Good of
Denmark. He was made duke of southern Jutland, ruled very well, and
helped missionaries. In 1129 he became king of the western
Wends---over the protests of his uncle, the king of Denmark. The
quarrel led to his being murdered by two of his cousins. C. was
canonized in 1169.
Raymond of Penaforte (d. 1275) Raymond was a Catalonian who studied
law and philosophy, serving as archdeacon of Barcelona before he
became a Dominican in 1222. He was a famous preacher, served as
confessor to Gregory IX (during his time in Rome he collected and
codified papal decrees since 1150), and in 1235 was appointed
archbishop of Tarragona (although he soon talked the pope out of it).
R. returned to Spain, but in 1238 was elected master general of the
Dominicans. He soon resigned on the grounds that at 65 he was too
old for the work---after which he lived another 35 years, actively
working on conversion in newly conqueed parts of Spain. R. was
canonized in 1601.
