Essentially 1 hand is equal to 4 inches, the equivalent of which is 101.6mm. See p169 of

Subject: [ZOOARCH] Reference for Clutton-Brock
I have been given some information regarding the conversion of a
horse's height from metres to hands (i.e. one hand = 101.6mm). I
believe this came from Clutton-Brock, 1974.
Can anyone provide me with the full reference for this, please?
with many thanks
